Kill Switch
It will not work. if you don't use it. Back when Bob Steiner was a pup, you had to hold on tightly to the steering wheel, or the prop torque would violently turn the wheel for you, and throw you out of the boat. Some of us got to see this first hand at Banks Lake, when two ski boats ran into each other. The impact threw everyone out of one boat. Three of them landed in the water, and a fourth landed in the other boat. The ones in the water had to kick off the bottom of their boat every time it passed as it circled around and around, continuously trying to kill them in the water. Dana Steiner carried the girl that had landed in the other boat to Coulee Playland Resort where an ambulance was waiting.
Now if you are thrown from a boat with hydraulic steering, your boat will track a very straight line away from you, and toward the hardest basalt it can find. If your kill switch is hooked up, and you are thrown into the water for any reason, your boat will stop and patiently wait for you nearby.
Boat Safety Improvements
No doubt about it, hydraulic steering has greatly improved boat safety. If you have cable steering, you know all about wheel torque. In conjunction with a kill switch (with hydraulic steering the boat will stay on course without you in the boat), Hot Foot, life jacket, and NO ALCOHOL, you are pretty safe on the water.
